Well, it is official. Rob and I are now outnumbered by teenagers. On this date, an incredible 13 years ago, these two adorable babies entered the world.

Catheryn and Nathan – 1.5 months

Watching my children grow has been one of the biggest joys of my life. To our twins, thank you for being so amazing! We love you more that you will ever know! Happy 13th Birthday, Twinnies!!!

The Birthday Roll…

And finally… 🙂

It’s Fine to be Nine

“Birthdays are nature’s way of telling us to eat more cake.”

What do you get when you add barbecued chicken, a present or two, some cake and ice cream and a few streamers? “The best birthday EVER!!” according to the twinnies.

Happy 9th Birthday, Catheryn and Nathan!

Happy 9th Birthday, Twinnies!!

Seven Awesome Years

While it may be just another day for some, for us, it is anything but. Seven years ago today we welcomed two new member to our family, and our small family of three officially became The Harper 5. These beautiful additions have brought us so much joy over the years. We couldn’t imagine life without their beautiful, smiling faces. Happy Birthday, Dear Twinnies. May your special day be all you hoped it would be… and more.

Happy 7th Birthday, Twinnies!

On Growing Up

Our twins have always been a big fan of sucking on their digits. Catheryn favors her first two fingers and Nathan prefers his thumb. We have been trying to break them of this habit, but we have not had any luck yet.

That is, until last Friday…

As we were gathering our things in preparation for camping, I asked Nathan if he had his CowCow. Nathan always sleeps with CowCow, he also only sucks his thumb when he has him. He casually told me that he wasn’t taking CowCow. Seriously? Are you going to be able to sleep without him? Why are you leaving him home?

“Because I’m not sucking my thumb anymore.”

I have not seen his thumb in his mouth since.

Catheryn has lovies of her own. She rubs her Care Bear “babies” on the side of her face while sucking her fingers. A couple of days ago, she picked up a doll a friend of mine had given me in high school, and I haven’t seen her with her babies since. I don’t think she wants to be left behind in the quest to be “digit-free.”

They are both trying so hard.

CowCow and the Care Bear “Babies” have been wonderful companions for the twinnies, but I think it may be about time for them to make way for other “friends.” I myself have grown quite attached to their lovies over the years. They have always gone along on outings and vacations. It will be strange leaving them home. But, my babies are growing up.

I was thinking about this earlier today, and I remembered William just a few short years ago.

William was also a thumb sucker. I tried and tried to get him to stop, but he wouldn’t.  He didn’t want to take naps anymore, so we made a deal. He stops sucking his thumb and I won’t make him take any more naps. Fine, he said. On my fifth birthday, I will stop. I kid you not, his fifth birthday rolled around, and I never saw his thumb in his mouth again.

My Dear Twinnies

I would love to have seen my face that day in the ultrasound room when your dad jumped up, pointed at the screen and yelled, “I KNEW IT!!!” Oh great, I thought, my baby has two heads. “IT’S TWINS, ISN’T IT?!?” I think at that point I about fell off the bed. It’s WHAT?

As it turns out, there were two heads. I had you two, both perfectly healthy babies, hanging out in my tummy together. Baby A was my sweet little girl and Baby B was my adorable little boy. Sugar and spice, slime and snails. Wow, a two-for-one deal. I definitely wasn’t expecting that.

It seems like just last month that you joined our family. In actuality, it has been years. Six to be exact. Six years ago today you entered our world and improved our lives in ways we never thought possible. Where does the time go? How can it possibly go by so fast? Are you really old enough to be in Kindergarten already?

You are so similar and yet so different. You are connected and yet individuals. You are both perfect with your bright eyes and big hearts and amazing personalities. I cannot begin to tell you how much we love you or how lucky we are to have you both in our lives. And yet, I feel as though there should be something I can say that will help you understand.

I think perhaps the best thing to say is… Thank You. For bringing such joy to our lives. For making us laugh. For reminding us what is important in life. For forgiving our faults. For simply being you.

Today and always, I wish you all the happiness in the world. You truly deserve it my lovelies, my angels, my twinnies.

Happy Birthday!!! Love you to pieces 🙂
